"This film is about two neighbors living side by side. Their lifestyles are diametrically opposed: on one side, all is fast, loud, and disposable. The other is calm, quiet, and doddering. "Second Hand" refers to the clock and the art of re-using objects. The omnipresent ticking clock propels one man's excessive, aggressive, stress-filled routine. On the other hand, the relaxed, resourceful, low-impact couple have no impetus to throw anything away, and their hoarding habit is also problematic.
These independent lifestyles are not only linked, but depend on each other. The ultimate theme of balance is explored in this film about efficiency, disposability, clutter, environmental awareness, and getting along with our neighbors.
Telling this story through animation allowed me to express the extremes of the characters fully. Cartoonish line drawing and exaggerated timing was important. The animation technique combines drawn and stop-motion elements."
